Common Questions
Where are we?
We are located at the intersections of Church and Warren Streets in Tunkhannock near the Court House or 4 Church Street if you're putting us in GPS. We have 2 buildings: the Church Sanctuary and the Education Building located on opposite corners here.
Where do I park?
We have a small parking lot behind the Church Sanctuary, which fills up quickly. Most folks park on the surrounding streets (Marion, Washington or Warren Streets). There are a few handicapped spots located on Warren Street right in front of the church if you need those.
What do I wear?
Please come as you are. There's no need to dress up for us! We're just glad to have you join us. There will be people in jeans, people in dresses, people in button down shirts and khakis, and everything in between.
What should I expect?
Most people enter the Church through our main doors (red doors at the top of the stairs off of Church Street). Once inside, heading upstairs takes you to the Sanctuary where the service is held. Downstairs we have a an area to hang coats, and area where fellowship will happen after service. Bathrooms are available both upstairs near the back of the Sanctuary and downstairs. Our handicapped entrance is off of Warren Street should you need it.
What is a service like? What will the service consist of?
A typical service includes a responsive call to worship, unison reading, several hymns, music, a Children's Chat, prayer, scripture lesson and message. In the beginning, we typically greet each other, and announcements are at the beginning before our worship service starts.
The first Sunday of the month we celebrate communion and everyone is welcome to partake in it! We typically take communion by intinction, which means we dip the bread into the cup. People partake by coming down the center aisle and returning to their seats by the side aisles. If you are unable to come forward and wish to partake, please let an usher know and it will be brought to you.
Are there any "rules" that I need to know?
There are no specific "rules". Most people enter the Church through our main doors (red doors at the top of the stairs off of Church Street).
We'd love to have you come check us out. As a visitor, you are welcome to participate in any of the ministry opportunities or activities listed in the bulletin inserts. You don't need to be a member.
What accessibility options are available?
We have a handicapped entrance and several parking spaces off of Warren Street as well as handicap accessible bathrooms at the rear on the Sanctuary level.
Large print bullentins and hymnals are available if you need. Please ask an usher.
Assisted Hearing devices hooked into our sound system are available - request one from an usher if you need one.
What do I do with my kids during the service?
Children are invited to participate in our worship to the best of their ability. "Blessing Bags" with Children's activities are available in the rear of the sanctuary for use during the service. An usher can assist you in locating these.
How do I ask for prayers for myself or someone else?
We have a time of prayer during our service. There are prayer cards located in the pew racks that can be filled out and placed in the basket on the windowsill prior to the Children's Chat. These will be given to the pastor for inclusion in the pastoral prayer and the concerns will also be prayed for by our staff.

A BRIEF HISTORY
The Tunkhannock United Methodist Church was founded in 1828. Then it was called a Methodist Society. The first church building was completed in 1869. In 1937, the original wooden church burned to the ground. A picture of that church is by our guest book in the rear of the sanctuary. Our current building was finished in 1939. Our educational building was dedicated in 1985.
